カトリック高輪教会　聖堂

太平洋戦争が終結して間もない頃、バチカン(ローマ)からの緊急要請に応えて、カナダのスカボロ外国宣教会は、日本での布教を始めました。東京の中でも比較的被害の少なかった、港区高輪の焼け残った一邸宅で、ミサが捧げられているのを知った近隣の信者が集まり始め、ここから高輪教会が生まれました。信徒数の増加に伴って現在の地に移り、古い日本家屋を司祭館として、1959年、新しく木造の聖堂が献堂されました。日本の町並みに合ったこの教会は、人々に愛されてきましたが、建物の老朽化に伴い、1989年に現在の聖堂に建て替えられました。(1979年に当教会は外国宣教会から東京教区に移管され、現在に到っています。)

History of Takanawa Catholic Church

Soon after the end of World War II, the Canadian Scarborough Fathers came to Takanawa to open a mission chapel. Neighboring Catholics, hearing of the presence of the Catholic priests, soon began gathering there for Mass. Thus was born Takanawa Catholic Church.
In 1959 at its current location a new wooden church was built adjacent to the then-existing Japanese style old house, which was used as the Fathers'residence. A Large portion of the money came from the generous faithful in Canada.
However by 1989 the Church was quickly deteriorating and a new church was planned and build. The Christian community now numbered over 1,600.
